Mentor application

Guide the next generation

Share your experience, networks, and encouragement with first-generation students navigating college and career.

Why mentor

Your story opens doors

First-generation students of color often have the talent and work ethic. What they lack is someone in the room who has walked the path, opens doors, and stays when things get hard. That is where SUMMIT mentors come in.

SUMMIT mentors are professionals, alumni, and community leaders who show up consistently — not just for advice, but for access, accountability, and belief. You do not need a perfect résumé. You need a story worth sharing, time to invest, and a willingness to guide students (primary mentoring hub at ODU; Hampton Roads mentors welcome).

Matched with intention

1–2 mentees at a time, paired by campus, major, and career goals so your experience actually fits their path.

Show up consistently

Monthly touchpoints — virtual or in-person across Hampton Roads. Students remember who stayed in their corner.

More than advice

Introductions, interview prep, SPIE-aligned accountability, and encouragement when first-gen students doubt themselves.

Part of the movement

Join 90+ STEM graduates since 2017 — optional workshops, conference trips, and a community that multiplies impact.

What mentors provide

Mentoring at The SUMMIT is holistic. Pick the areas below where you can add the most value.

Access

Networks, internships, and the unwritten rules of your industry — doors talent alone cannot always open.

Accountability

SPIE-aligned check-ins on academics, wellness, purpose, and discipline — keeping students moving forward.

Belief

Encouragement through setbacks. First-gen students need someone who has seen them win before they believe it.

Community

Mentor circles, workshops, and events alongside other professionals invested in the same mission.

“When alumni and partners show up, students believe the path is real.”

The SUMMIT team
